Monday, 1st Surgical Day

Monday Night 11:00 pm Cambodia

Well, this entry will have to be short because today was pretty rough. We left the hotel at 6:30 this morning to go to the hospital and didn't get back until 8:30 tonight.

We operated on 28 people today. They are all in one big post op room tonight. The beds have no mattresses and the IVs are hanging from wire strung from the ceiling. We also had 40 new patients come in to be screened today. Several of them will get operated on later in the week.

There was so much confusion today - we are all exhausted. I'm sure that tomorrow will be better. We will try to put up some before and after pictures tomorrow night because they are AMAZING. Today, we operated on a 21 year old man who had never had his lip fixed. He looks perfect now. His mother was crying she was so grateful. She hugged me so many times.

Brian was so busy today - working with kids waiting for surgery who are hungry, tired and hot. It is so HOT. Brian got to go in to the operating room to see a couple of surgeries. He will write about it tomorrow. I am hoping to get in to watch surgery tomorrow when things are a little less hectic.

We love to read your replies, so keep them coming.
Love,
M&B

I'm checking this site religiously to see how things are going. Let me know if there's anything you want me to send out from this end. The pictures were phenomenal. Get some rest and look forward to hearing how things go tomorrow!

Hi, it's me Judy....
What a day, what a difference you have made! Brian, how'd you make out in the operating room??? I know if it was me, they would have been scraping me off the floor at the first sight of blood! What a great story about the young man, I'm sure he feels like he has been given a new lease on life. The temps sound brutal, we're chilling here at around 35 degrees, I'll wish for you some coooool breezes from the west. We miss you both, can you believe that in just 6 days we will be serving you Easter dinner back in Boxford... we promise not to serve any "mystery meat" (how does Spring lamb sound?). LOVE you both.

Hi Guys,
What an incredible experience to be such an important part of! It must make you feel so good to be such an important part of this. Brian, I have the same question as Auntie Judy, "how did you do in the OR? I would have passed out in the first five minutes! I have been in the OR way too many times lately, but at least I was asleep in five minutes! It must have been amazing to get to actually see a surgery that have had done yourself. Can't wait to see the before and after pictures. Try to stay cool, we'll send some cool thoughts your way! We'll talk to you soon. Love you both.
Love, Auntie Patti

Hi Marge and Brian!

I have been checking your blog everyday when I get into work and what you two are experiencing is absolutely mindblowing. It is so hard to imagine what you are living when I can only use my imagination through your descriptive writing. The pictures are amazing and the children are so cute! My heart would break every time I looked at them, as I'm sure yours do.

I must tell you that I was grocery shopping in Southie last week and an Operation Smile table was set up at the entrance!! I wanted to tell them all about your trip, but they were gone when I left.

Keep up the good work and the cold weather will be waiting for you this weekend!!

Love, Jules

Hi M&B,
This site is truely amazing. You guys are terrific. I look forward to reading your blogs. The pictures, well, there are no words... You're doing amazing work. On the lighter side - now that Brian has been in the operating room, I think he needs a Dr. "Mc" name!! Margaret, once you go in you will get one too!! Take care. You're in our thoughts.
